A multi-sport athlete, Jim Gilmartin (1947-1950) played four years of basketball at Wagner and two on the football team. Gilmartin led the Seahawk hoopsters to a 19-5 record in 1949-1950, which was the best mark in school history at the time, while claiming the Greater New York Conference by virtue of winning all seven league contests.
Gilmartin paced the team in scoring with 311 points and was named to the Greater NY Conference All-Star first team in each of his final two seasons while serving as team captain. He was named the Most Valuable Player in the Middle Atlantic States Tournament at the Palestra in March of 1949.
