Frank Gunther is the first Seahawk golfer to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame. In his senior year of 1964, while playing under head coach Herb Sutter, Gunther captured the prestigious Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Championship. A graduate of Staten Island Academy, he also served as captain of the 1964 team while earning Most Valuable Player honors. His leadership and sharp shot-making helped guide the Seahawks to a 9-1 record. Wagner lost its opening match of the season but reeled off nine consecutive wins thereafter. The Green & White capped the season with victories over St. John’s and Manhattan in a tri-meet.
 
The win over St. John’s was particularly noteworthy since the Red Storm was considered one of the top teams in the East. A team captain in his junior and senior years, he was also a three-year standout goalie on the Seahawk soccer team.
