The late Charles Hellriegel (1935-1937) was primarily a football player - the right halfback playing for coach Frank Spotts and later for Coach Ray Kirchmeyer. Hellriegel played three years at Wagner.
In an era before World War II, and with a relatively small enrollment, the better athlete was either chosen or asked to participate in two or even three sports unlike most athletes of the modern era. Hellriegel was also star catcher for the baseball team, ran the 400 meter dash and long jumped for the track & field team. Despite participating in three sports, Hellriegel still managed to take part in the school government.
