A native Staten Islander, Bob Mahala is regarded as one of the finest basketball players to don the Green & White, notching 1,217 points and 906 rebounds, both of which continue to rank among the all-time leaders despite being accrued over 50 years ago. One of only fourth Seahawks to ever score 40 points in a game, Mahala graduated as the third leading scorer and second leading rebounder at Wagner. Serving as a captain of the 1956-1957 team, Mahala averaged 16.5 ppg and 9.9 rebounds per game. In 1950 he was awarded the Jacques Memorial Trophy given to the best high school basketball player on Staten Island. His son Bob followed in his footsteps and earned four letters for the Wagner basketball team from 1979-1983. A retired airline pilot captain, he splits his residence between Sarasota, Florida and Spring Lake Heights, New Jersey.
