Dr. Bill Willetts graduated as arguably one of the finest athletes to ever don a baseball uniform for Wagner College. He was one of the top pitchers in school history, beating St. John’s twice in the same season, a feat that has never been duplicated by any Wagner pitcher. Dr. Willetts also holds the school-record for most wins in a season (10 in 1948) and in a career (19). Considered the top pitcher in the metropolitan area during his days as a Seahawk, Willetts is fondly remembered not only for his tenacious attitude on the mound but also as a forward on the basketball team, helping the Seahawks to a 17-5 record on the hardwood during his senior year. His success was not limited to the field as Willetts also excelled in the classroom. After his graduation in 1948, Dr. Willetts went on to medical school and became an oral surgeon. Wagner’s former on-campus baseball field was also named after the esteemed doctor.
