Catching Up With Jacksonville Jaguar Julian Stanford

Jacksonville, FL - Julian Stanford signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in the spring and is one of three former Wagner football players currently with NFL teams. This is the third of a three part Q&A interview series that will catch up with the former Seahawks currently in the pros. Click HERE to read Quintin Anderson's interview and HERE to read Jeremiah Brown's interview.

Stanford was also profiled by Jacksonville in the Jaguars' Rookie 101 video series last week. Click HERE to watch the video.

Q:  Give us a rundown of a typical day in Jacksonville?
A: I get up at 6:00 am, before waking up myself up with a shower. Before the first team meeting of the day, I grab some breakfast from the team dining area. Then from then I have a series of meetings; positional, special teams, team, defensive and individual.  After all the meetings, we have practice and rehab. If we are having multiple practices, I eat in between, or head home.

Q:  Who are some of the players in your rookie class?
A: Justin Blackmon (Oklahoma State), Andre Branch (Clemson), Josh Jones (Elon) Brandon Marshall (Nevada), Drew Nowak (Western Michigan) and J.K. Schaffer (Cincinnati).

Q:  What veterans have been the most helpful?
A: Russell Allen has been extremely helpful. He tries to mentor the rookies out as much as he can and I really look up to him a lot. Daryl Smith is also a good role model. He has been with the Jaguars for nine years and really knows the ropes.

Q: What do you like most about the NFL?
A: The competition and the coaching. I love the fact that I am on the field with the best athletes. Additionally, the coaches are very insightful. They teach you the correct techniques and the proper and most efficient ways to do things.

Q: How is NFL football different then Wagner football?
A: The NFL is obviously at a higher level and the game speed is much faster. An example is technique at the next level. The coaches harp on it in the NFL, because if you don't have good technique, you won't be effective.

Q: What do you miss most about Wagner?
A: Just being around my Wagner family (close friends & teammates) that I have been with the last four years of my college career.

Q: Why did you choose to continue your training at Wagner after minicamp?
A: I came back here to do my training, to see my Wagner family and because I felt it was a great atmosphere for me.  I know if I go home, I won't train as hard as I should be. My strength coach (Brandon Beach) has guided me along the last two years and has helped me out drastically. So why stop now?

Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A: I spend a lot of time resting, relaxing and studying my playbook. I try to stay off my feet and let my body recover as much as possible to get ready for the next day.  I also unwind by playing video games, and will sometimes head out to the mall, but nothing too crazy.

Q:  What Wagner coach prepared you the most for the NFL?
A: My defensive coordinator Malik Hall and Coach Beach. Hall came in with a new mentality and his schemes really helped me mature as a player. In a physical aspect, Beach has helped me develop physically.

Q: How are you adjusting to the Florida heat?
A: (Laughs) The Florida Heat? When I first got there it was extremely hot. It was really different and tough, because I hadn't played in that kind of heat on a consistent basis. After rookie camp and as we got into OTAs, I started to get used to it. To me it was a mental thing.

Q: What advice would you give to the Wagner players, concerning playing in Florida (The Seahawks open up the 2012 season at Florida Atlantic on August 31)?
A: Go out and take it day-by-day and let everything fall into place.

Q: What player have you become the most close to?
A: My fellow linebackers Marshall and Schaffer.

Q: Describe the speed of the NFL game to the college game?
A: An example is the offensive line. In college the linemen just duckwalk to the second level, where as in the pros they just run after the ball is hiked. They usually climb up on you faster and are much bigger.

Q: Had anyone heard of Wagner College before you arrived?
A: Most people had not. My strength coach knew about the NEC , as he played with Hank Fraley, who starred at Robert Morris.

Before Anderson, Brown and Stanford, the last Green & White player to sign with a NFL team was former First Team All Northeast Conference (NEC) kicker and punter Piotr Czech ('08). Czech attended training camp with the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers.
