Staten Island, NY - On Saturday, December 1, the Wagner College women's soccer team hosted a Benefit “Play Day” at Hameline Field in an effort to raise funds and gather donations in support of those on Staten Island who were affected by Hurricane Sandy.
More than 30 teams from Staten Island, New Jersey, Brooklyn and Long Island participated and helped to raise nearly $11,000. The teams, ranging in age groups from under-7 to over- 40, also contributed in excess of 800 pounds of canned food as well as some 450 toys and stuffed animals.
All of the collected funds and donated toys were delivered to the Stephen Siller Foundation on December 5 by members of the Wagner soccer team, with all proceeds benefiting the foundation's
Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund.
The canned food donations were dropped off at Project Hospitality and will be given out to the community on the morning of Monday, December 10.
The Wagner women's soccer team would like to thank all of those that participated in playing and giving, “ said Seahawk head coach
Mike Minielli. ““The support that our team received from the surrounding communities was outstanding.
“A special thank you is due to the number of referees, organized by Tom Welch, who volunteered their time to officiate the games,” Minielli added. “Thanks also to Dave Reeves, of LI Photo Group, for donating the welcome banner.
“And last, but certainly not least, we'd like to send out a big thank you to Mr. Henry Schon and Mr. Leo Gutman of New Vanderbilt Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, who donated $1,000 to the cause.
