Staten Island, NY - Wagner College senior quarterback
Nick Doscher (Staten Island, NY/ Staten Island) and sophomore cornerback
Jarrett Dieudonne (Fort Lauderdale, FL/ Dillard) were named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, for their key roles in the Seahawks' resounding 30-0 win at Albany on Saturday.
The 6-2, 225-pound Doscher engineered the 30-point offensive outburst in helping Wagner get past Empire State rival Albany. Doscher totaled 285 yards of offense as the Green & White took over first place in the NEC standings as well as the inside track in the race for the conference's automatic NCAA FCS playoff bid.
Spearheading his remarkable eighth consecutive turnover-free showing, Doscher was an efficient 10-of-15 passing for 253 yards and two touchdowns as Wagner won its sixth straight NEC game, for the first time since the league was formed in 1996. Ranked ninth on the Seahawk all-time rushing list with 2,018 yards, Doscher carried the ball 10 times for 32 yards as the Green & White posted their first victory over Albany since the 2000 season.
A pair of first-half touchdown passes, a two-yarder to junior tight end
Joe Sidaras (William Floyd HS/ Mastic Beach,), and a career-tying 88-yard strike to sophomore wide receiver
Anthony Carrington (Toms River, NJ/ Toms River), gave the Seahawks a commanding 20-0 lead by the 11:35 mark of the second quarter.
The performance by Doscher was the latest in a line of productive and effective outings for the cagey field general. During Wagner's six-game NEC win streak, he has accounted for 11 touchdowns (7 pass, 4 rush) with no interceptions. In fact, Doscher has now attempted 143 consecutive passes without an interception over a span of 8.5 games (19 consecutive quarters). The lone pick that Doscher has thrown all year came in the second quarter of the season opener at Florida Atlantic on August 3, as he has now entered his third straight month without throwing a single interception. For the season, Doscher has thrown eight TD passes in addition to that lone interception.
Dieudonne's play at cornerback helped limit Albany to just 188 yards of total offense in recording the shutout over a team that entered the game as the league' top-ranked scoring offense at 34.2 points per game.
The second-year Seahawk made his presence felt against the run and pass, amassing four tackles, including 2.0 tackles for loss, while also recording three pass break-ups. . The 6-1, 195-pound transfer from Purdue, helped lead a pass defense that held Albany to a season-low 103 yards through the air, Two of his four tackles came in third-down situations, stopping the Great Danes short of a first down on both occasions.
The first impact play delivered by Dieudonne came during the opening minutes of the second quarter with Albany looking to cut into Wagner's 14-0 advantage. Great Dayne quarterback Will Fiacchi completed a pass to Nick Hutcherson on a 3rd-and-7 play from Wagner's 12-yard line, but Dieudonne immediately dropped the receiver to the turf one yard shy of the first-down marker.
With Albany nearing midfield later on in the second quarter, Dieudonne derailed another Great Danes' drive by sacking Fiacchi for a three-yard loss on a 3rd-and-2 play. The sophomore cornerback's other two tackles came during first-down situations and both limited the ball carrier to four-yard gains.
For the season, Dieudonne has produced 29 tackles, two interceptions and six pass deflections.
