Seahawks Drop Rain-Soaked Contest to Youngstown State, 11-5

Kissimmee, FL - At a rainy Fortune Road field, the Wagner College softball team fell to the Youngstown State University (YSU) Penguins 11-5 on day three of the Rebel Spring Games. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 3-12 on the season. Due to inclement weather, Wagner's night cap vs. Indiana State University was cancelled. 

The Penguins jumped out to a five-run lead in the first, scoring on a home run to left field, a single to left center and a double down the left field line. YSU tallied its sixth run in the bottom of the second frame on a single up the middle, before plating four more runs in the third. The Penguins' runs in the fourth came ona pair of singles. 

With the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, Wagner put together a four-run rally on freshman Brittany Huss's (Anthem, AZ / Boulder Creek) grand slam home run over the left field fence. Scoring on the play were sophomore Amanda Garcia (Fresno, CA / California State University, Fresno) (reached on a single to center), junior Emily Pierce (Phoenix, AZ/ Desert Vista) (reached on a single up the middle), freshman Andrea Carini (Monroe Township, NJ / Monroe) (pinch ran for senior Amanda deLancellotti (San Clemente, CA / Florida C.C. at Jacksonville), who was walked) and Huss. In the bottom of the frame, YSU notched its last run on a double to left. 

Wagner scored once more in the top of the sixth on freshman Terah DeBinder's (Cypress, CA / Cypress) ground out to the shortstop. Scoring on the play was sophomore Vanessa Lenart (Fontana, CA / Henry J. Kaiser HS), who pinch ran for deLancellotti (reached on a walk). 

The game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to unplayable weather conditions. 

Sharing responsibilities in the circle were freshman Judy Betz (Ashburn, VA / Broad Run), senior Danielle Wagoner (Temecula, CA / Temecula Valley) and Garcia. Betz took the loss through .2 of an inning while allowing five earned runs. Wagoner pitched two innings, fanning two and allowing three earned runs while Garcia finished the 2.1 innings of play, allowing one earned run. 

Wagner's second game against Indiana State was cancelled due to the weather conditions. 

The Seahawks return to action at the Rebel Games tomorrow, Friday March 12th when they face Butler at 5:30PM and Lehigh at 6:30PM.
